The school of Athens
Remaining on the subject of the past few days: the greatest representation of philosophical matter is the fresco “The School of Athens” by #Raphael which depicts all together the most famous thinkers and mathematicians of antiquity.
☞ Do you know…
‣ The two protagonists in the center are #Plato, on the left with the robe highlighted by our bright red and Aristotle, that is the two philosophers who have laid the foundations of Western thought.
The artist represents his characters with other #faces for example for Plato he uses that of Leonardo da Vinci to further mark the allegorie. In addition to them, there are another 56 figures on the scene, including a self-portrait by Raphael himself
‣ The design of this #painting stems from the desire to strengthen, in the eyes of the community, the relationship between classical #culture and Christianity. Therefore the interpretation of “The School of Athens” – exaltation of rational #thought – cannot be separated from the fresco that is found in the same Vatican room but on the opposite wall: “Disputation of the Sacrament” which in fact treats faith and #theology
