St. Peter’s Colonnade
4 rows, 284 columns, 88 pillars and 140 statues overlooking the 320 meters of St. Peter’s #Colonnade built between 1657 and 1666 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini
·
The original closed structure of St. Peter’s #Square amazed the faithful who, protected in this metaphorical embrace of marble, suddenly found himself in front of the majesty of the #Basilica
·
At the center of the square a brick with a simple engraving “Center of the colonnade”.
From that point an optical #illusion allows to admire only the first row of columns, hiding all the others. How is it possible? Thanks to a brilliant intuition by Bernini: gradually increase the diameter of the columns to create this extraordinary visual effect
