A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte
Where and how are you spending your day?
A very explanatory title “A #Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” represents a typical Sunday afternoon in the open air of a small island on the Seine, not far from the heart of Paris and easily reachable from city center by railway line. This ease of access made this place of #relaxation a destination frequented by all different social classes, as the picture depicts
☞ Do you know…
‣ The author Georges #Seurat died with his works in the atelier, convinced that they would never be exhibited at museum. Even after his death, in fact, it took years for the undoubted creativity and skill of the artist to be understood. So was a private art dealer to buy the painting at good price to donate it to The Art Institute of Chicago. Only then did #France made important offers, but without any success. The work is in fact still exhibited in the United States
‣ The imposing size of the canvas – 7 by 10 feet – made entirely through touches of brushstrokes, it let us imagine the artist’s pictorial commitment. Seurat, in fact, a pioneer of the pointillist movement, is considered today a forerunner of the #pixel by having demonstrated with his technique how various #dots of pure color, maintaining the maximum intensity and brightness, through the retina in the observer’s eye they merge giving a uniform appearance to the image
